It's a lovely and sunny day here on Islay, everything is prepared for the Islay Jazz Festival which is sponsored by Lagavulin Distillery. According with the start of the Jazz Festival, all these whisky enthusiasts who came to this beautyful island can hope for another bottling for this special occasion.
There were quite a lot of rumours going around - "they will release a single cask", "it comes in an expensive package", and some more. So we were excited to get more information about it. And this is the information we got next.
21 year old, a limited release of 2004 bottles and it isn't even a bargain with GBP 395.
The whisky has officially announced as "been matured in a combination of refill and recharred American oak hogsheads before being bottled at 50.1% abv"
Heute ist ein wunderschöner sonniger Tag hier auf Islay, alles ist vorbereitet für das alljährliche Islay Jazz Festival, das auch in diesem Jahr von Lagavulin Distillery gesponsort wird. Wie in jedem Jahr erhoffen alle angereisten Whiskyenthusiasten auf eine weitere der speziell für das Jazz Festival aufgelegten Sonderabfüllungen.
Es gab in den letzten Tagen und Wochen jede Menge Gerüchte, was wohl dieses Mal aus dem Hut gezaubert wird. "Dieses Mal gibt es ein Einzelfass", "es soll eine besondere Verpackung haben" und viele weitere Mutmaßungen wurden zum Besten gegeben.
Mitte letzter Woche sahen wir dann folgende Information:
21 Jahre alt, limitiert auf 2004 Flaschen und mit 395 GBP nicht mal eben ein Schnäppchen.
Die offizielle Verlautbarung spricht bei diesem Whisky von einer Reifung in einer Kombination aus nachgefüllten und "recharred" American Oak Hogsheads und mit einer Abfüllung von 50.1%abv .
Lagavulin Jazz Festival 2019 21 yo, 2004 bottles, 50.1%abv
Colour: light gold
Nose: slightly smoky, lemon, grapefruit, seabreeze, meaty, with hints of herbs.
On the palate: sweet, smoky, salty - salicorn. Mouthfilling, ripe citrus fruits, orange. After a while waitign and coming back: marzipan. And again seabreeze.
Aftertaste: the smoke is mouthfilling and long lasting, the dram itself is medium
It needs quite a while in the glass till it opens up.
It's definitely a nice dram.
Maybe some day we will spend another GBP 35 for another 2 cl dram to give it another try.

Lagavulin Jazz Festival 2019 21 yo, 2004 bottles, 50.1%abv
Farbe: helles Gold
Nase: zart rauchig, Zitrone und Grapefruit, Meeresbrise, fleischig mit feinen Kräuternoten.
Mund: gleichzeitig süß, rauchig und salzig - Queller oder auch Meeresspargel. Mundfüllend, nicht ganz so ölig wie vielleicht erwartet. Reife Zitrusfrüchte - Zitrone, Grapefruit, Meeresbrise, fleischig, leichte Kräuternoten.
Nachklang: der Rauch klebt quasi am Gaumen, der Abgang ansich ist mittellang.
Es ist ein wirklich hübscher Dram.
Vielleicht gönnen wir uns demnächst noch einmal einen 2 cl Dram für GBP 35 in der Distillery eigenen Bar und lassen ihm etwas mehr Zeit - mal schauen.

We had the chance to try it again - and of course, giving this dram a bit more time in the glass, you will get some tropical fruits and the lemon disappears. It is a complex dram - and this is what to expect after 21 years.

UPDATE:
Wir bekamen erneut die Möglichkeit, diesen Dram zu verkosten. Gibt man ihm etwas mehr Zeit im Glas, entfalten sich die tropischen Früchte, die man von einem Lagavulin in diesem Alter erwarten kann und die Zitrone verschwindet gänzlich.
